Effect of Intensive Oral Exercise in Some Urban Elderly

Abstract


Objective: This study was conducted to be used as basic data for developing oral exercise of the elderly in Korea.

Methods: They performed oral exercise two times per week for three months. Forty seven old persons were also recruited as the control group and were examined with the same methods applied to the management group.

Results: After the three-month oral exercise, Frequency of repetetative swallowing grew significantly by 1.4, Times of phonation went up significantly by 3.3 (p£¼0.01), the amount of saliva was increased by 4.6 mm (p£¼0.01) and the degree of mouth opening grew significantly by 0.57 cm in the intervention group (p£¼0.01). Before the management when their effect was evaluated by controlling the degree. But after the program there was a significant difference between the two groups (p£¼0.01). Cheek ballooning function test revealed a significant difference between the two groups them (p£¼0.05).

Conclusion: This study found that three-month systemic oral exercise to improve oral function enhanced oral function in the elderly.
